A Batesville man was taken into custody after a woman was injured in a stabbing incident Thursday, Aug. 12.
According to the affidavit of probable cause for arrest, George Anthony Brown, 53, allegedly stabbed a female victim at an east Batesville apartment.
The affidavit says Batesville officers were dispatched to White River Medical Center in reference to a female being treated for an apparent stab wound. The victim told police she had been staying at a residence on 23rd Street with Brown when she was stabbed in the torso.
Initially, the victim said she was stabbed by an unknown subject while walking her dog near Case and 23rd Streets. But, according to the affidavit, the victim later told authorities the stabbing actually occurred in the apartment’s bathroom.
The female explained to police she originally told a different story because she was “afraid for her life,” the affidavit said. When a police investigator would ask the victim if Brown was the one who stabbed her, the victim would “immediately shut down and begin to cry,” according to authorities.
After obtaining a search warrant, officers located an apparently inebriated Brown in the residence and also found a dried blood puddle, a pocket knife on the floor, two freshly washed steak knives in the sink, a radio scanner actively scanning the Independence County Sheriff’s Department frequency, and a plastic bag containing a “white crystalline substance” that later field-tested positive for methamphetamine, the affidavit noted.
Brown was taken into custody on a $50,000 bond, police said. He is facing three felony counts: aggravated assault; possession of methamphetamine, less than two grams; and unlawful use of a communication device. He is also being charged as a habitual offender, having been previously convicted of four or more prior felonies.
