Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens commented Tuesday on a confrontation at Lock 2 on the White River in Independence County over the weekend

According to the incident report, Independence County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the Locust Grove side of the river near Lock 2 around 1 a.m. on Aug. 29 in reference to shots being fired.

When deputies arrived and talked to people in the area, they were told a male driver and a female passenger on an ATV had been in the area trying to fight people.

In Deputy Nick Ade’s initial narrative, he reported one 22-year-old man was confronted by those on the ATV and was struck in the head with a beer bottle. Another witness, an 18-year-old female, was apparently hit by the ATV as it was exiting the area. The law enforcement narrative noted witnesses reported shots were also fired during the incident.

Tuesday morning, Sheriff Shawn Stephens said that he has talked with deputies and department investigators and concluded that both parties fired guns during the incident.

The sheriff also said it is his understanding that the prosecuting attorney has reviewed all the information on the early Sunday morning incident at Lock 2 and has declined to prosecute anyone in the case.
