It took two plays for the Southerners to reach the end zone Friday night, the second a 55-yard touchdown pass from Landen Haas to Jacob Dunne and Southside never looked back in running their record to 2-1 on the season with a 50-14 win over the Trumann Wildcats in 4A high school football action Friday night at Stewart Field in Southside.
Coach Reardon, remembering last year’s shutout loss to the Wildcats in Trumann and wanting to score early, decided to take the opening kickoff to let the offense take the field first and it paid off two plays later.
Trumann took their opening kickoff and scored as well, but missed the extra point and trailed 7-6.
On the Southerner’s second drive, Haas ran the ball 39 yards for the score and a 14-6, a one-yard run by Haas capped an 80-yard drive and gave Southside a 21-6 lead.
Trumann tried to rally and scored with 90 seconds left in the first half to cut it to 21-14, but Haas struck again with a 55-yard bomb to Seth Case with 40 seconds left in the half sending the Southerners to a 28-15 halftime lead.
A 19 yard Haas run, a 20-yard scoop and score by Jonathan Morgan, and a one-yard run by Devan Harper rounded out the scoring for the Southerners.
Southside had 444 yards of total offense on the night with 313 rushings and 131 passing.
The Southerners have the week off before hosting the number-two ranked Stuttgart Ricebirds at Stewart field.
