BREAKING: Rep. Stu Smith will not seek third term

District 63 State Rep. Stu Smith has announced he will not seek re-election in 2022. 

Smith made the announcement in a statement Tuesday night.

Smith, a longtime educator and Batesville native, will serve the remaining months of his second term of office.

“I will continue to work hard and proudly represent my district for the remaining 15 months of my current term,” Smith said in the statement. “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the people of Independence County and the great state of Arkansas.”

For the 93rd General Assembly, Rep. Smith serves on the Joint Committee on Public Retirement and Social Security Programs, the Legislative Joint Auditing Committee, the House Education Committee, and the House Aging, Children and Youth, Legislative & Military Affairs Committee.

He was elected to fill then-Rep. James Sturch’s seat in 2018 when Sturch ran a successful campaign for state senate.

A Lyon College graduate and retired educator, Smith was awarded the 2017 Batesville Community Educator of the Year. He has also received several national and state coaching awards and has been active in the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association as well as the Lyon College Alumni Association.

Smith said in his statement he has no immediate plans for the future, but has “…an open mind towards any good opportunity that might present itself.”

I will not be seeking re-election for a third term as State Representative from District 63 in 2022. 

I will continue to work hard and proudly represent my district for the remaining 15 months of my current term. 

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the people of Independence County and the great state of Arkansas. 

I do not have any immediate future plans, but I have an open mind towards any good opportunity that might present itself. 

Thank you for allowing me to serve the best folks I know.  

I love Independence County and the people who make it such a wonderful place to call home.
