A Stone County Deputy Sheriff pulled an unconscious man out of a burning vehicle only to have the man come to, hit the deputy, and attempt to flee on foot. That’s according to information from Stone County Circuit Court.
According to the arrest affidavit, Stone County Deputy Sheriff Trevor Leonard was trying to stop a red Cadillac speeding, at times, in excess of 100 mph on Nov. 8.
After the vehicle went off the highway in a curve, flipped twice, and came to rest on its top, the car then caught fire.
Authorities say the driver, identified as Paul Douglas Adams, 26, of Mountain View, was temporarily unconscious when Leonard pulled him out of the vehicle and helped him to the highway, away from the burning car.
When Adams regained consciousness, Leonard informed him he was under arrest, but Adams said he wasn’t going to jail. The court information said Adams then got up from the ground, hit Deputy Leonard on the side of the head, and then fled on foot into the woods.
After being joined in the foot pursuit by Deputy Christina Oliver, Adams was taken into custody and transported to the Stone County Jail where he is being held on a $100,000 bond.
Adams has been charged with two felonies: fleeing in a vehicle and battery in the second degree. He’s also being charged with three misdemeanors: resisting arrest, fleeing on foot, and reckless driving.
Adams is being charged as a habitual offender, having been convicted of previous felonies in Pope and Jackson counties.
