Friday night at Newport High School, the Mountain View Yellowjackets and Lady Yellowjackets both started their conference portion of their schedule on a positive note with a pair of victories over Newport.
In the opener the Mountain View Lady Yellowjackets defeated the Newport Lady Greyhounds by a score of 57-31. Trailing 6-3 with 2:58 to go in the first quarter, Mountain View went on a 11-0 run to end the quarter, getting baskets from Seniors, Emry Johnson, Kennedy Holland, Josie Storey, and two from Rylee Shipman. The Lady Yellowjackets out scored the Lady Greyhounds 39-14 over the next two quarters to cruise to the victory.
Mountain View was led in scoring by Storey who had 29 points and 7 assists, Johnson added 8 points and 11 rebounds, Holland 7 points and 11 rebounds, and Shipman 6 points. Newport was led by Raigan Head with 11 points, Avery Robinson added 8 points, and Grace Fain 6 points. The Lady Yellowjackets improved to 2-3 overall on the season and 1-0 in conference play. Newport dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
In the senior boys game, Mountain View outscored Newport 14-2 in the final 10:44 of the game to defeat the Greyhounds 42-19. Mountain View outscored Newport in every quarter to earn the victory in the conference opener. Samuel Fletcher and Elijah Carlton each led Mountain View with 12 points, Carlton added 9 rebounds, and Beck Morrow added 10 points. Newport was led by Jon Moore with 6 points. Mountain View improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Newport dropped to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
