Both Southside varsity teams traveled to Lonoke this week to play in the Goldfish Classic, and both teams opened with wins in the first round Wednesday.
Both teams rolled over Dewitt in the opening round. The Lady Southerners won 69-29 and were led in scoring by Olivia Allen with 23, Brett Gardner with 18, and Kamie Jenkins with 10. The senior boys rolled to an easy win as well over Dewitt winning 58-32.
Both teams played Rose Bud in the semi-finals. Olivia Allen scored early and often as the Lady Southerners built a 25 point lead and cruises to a 57-46 win to advance to the finals against the Lonoke Lady JackRabbits. Kamie Jenkins added 12 points, Callie Robbins had 9 and Brett Gardner had 7. The win moved the Lady Southerners to 13-1 on the season.
The senior boys struggled from the field in the first half and dug a hole just a little too deep to climb out of, cutting the lead to 8 in the 4th quarter but could come no close losing 60-52. Ayden Cuzzort was held scoreless in the first half, but had 19 in the second half to lead Southside.
The third-place senior boys game will start at 5:30 p.m., the championship game for the senior girls will begin at 7 p.m., both Thursday.
