George Little Dortch, II, age 90, died on Sunday, January 23, 2022. He was born in Little Rock, AR, on August 21, 1931, to Robert Leak Dortch and Katherine Morton Dortch of Scott, AR. Both grandparents on his paternal side were pioneers who had plantations in Lonoke and Pulaski counties with the well-known one being Marlsgate in Scott, AR. He graduated high school from Culver Military Academy in Culver, IN and was known as an outstanding track athlete.
Dortch received a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from the University of AR in 1954. Upon graduation from college, Dortch entered military service in the United States Airforce where he became a pilot, rising to the rank of 1st lieutenant before being honorably discharged.
On June 18, 1955, Dortch married Della Mae Dunkin, the daughter of Mertie Arnold and Damon Dunkin. George and Della Mae enjoyed 65 years of marriage prior to Della Mae passing on January 6, 2021. After Dortch left military service, he moved to Scott, AR with his bride, and joined his father in large farming, seed company, and cotton gin operation. In the mid-1960s, Dortch moved his family to Batesville, AR to become Vice President of Silica Products. Dortch was an avid golfer and actively played until the time of his passing.
Survivors include George Dortch Jr. and his wife, Chandler of Rolla, Missouri, Damon Dortch and his wife, Diane of Little Rock, AR; grandson, Steele Dortch and his wife, Leah of Van Buren, AR; great-grandson Elias Steele Dortch of Van Bruen; sister, King Dobbins of Colorado; and many nieces and nephews. The Dortch family owes a debt of gratitude to Rene Denton for her friendship and help. Special thanks go to Les Frensely and Jim Wann, two of George Dortch’s closest friends, who stood by the bedside to the very end.
Pallbearers are Sam Cook and John Cook. Honorary pallbearers are Les Frensley.
Funeral services will be Friday, January 28, 2022, at 2:00 pm at the Roller-Crouch Chapel with Katie Pearce officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
