The ninth-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagles scored four runs in the first inning and four more runs in the third to defeat the Lyon College Scots 9-5 on Monday afternoon at Fred Wann Field in Batesville.
Seth Delgado walked, Jesus Rojas singled and Juan Goncalves walked to load the base. Josh Logan walked in Delgado, then Derek Sims singled in two runs and Logan advanced to third base. Goncalves and Rojas scored on the play. Sims stole second and Logan went home on the throw down to second base to make it 4-0.
Delgado doubled in Hector Manon in the top of the second inning to make it a 5-0 lead for the Eagles.
Zane Wallace singled and with one out, Joe Weatherford singled for Lyon. Jayden Cull doubled to left-center field scoring Wallace. Weatherford scored on a throwing error by the OKWU right fielder. Tristan Buschow singled in Cull to make it a 5-3 game heading into the third inning.
The Eagles put up four more runs with Goncalves leading off with a double, and scoring on a two-run single from Mason Brinkley. Cody Muncy doubled off the left-field wall to score two more runs for Oklahoma Wesleyan for a 9-3 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Scots picked up a run when Alan West reached first on a throwing error by the catcher. Aaron Hurd singled West to second and Wallace reached on a fielder’s choice. West was able to come home on a wild pitch to make the score 9-4.
Weatherford drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth inning and Cull walked and Weatherford scored on a sacrifice fly from Zach Ellis.
The Scots left four runners on base in the last two innings.
