A Newark man and a Sulphur Rock woman were taken into custody Feb. 25 after a short pursuit.

According to the incident report, Independence County Sheriff’s Deputy Nick Ade was patrolling in the Magness area when he noticed a white Chevrolet Avalanche with tags that returned to a Dodge Durango. The vehicle did not initially stop when the emergency lights and siren were activated, the report said.

When the vehicle eventually made a quick stop, the female passenger, identified in the report as Nariah Nicole Smart, 20, exited the vehicle and ran into the woods. Detective Zach Bailey, assisting in the pursuit, went after Smart, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Ade continued his pursuit until the Avalanche stopped on Shelley Lane in Newark. The driver, Brian Wayne Fallis, 37, was taken into custody.  Meanwhile, Detective Bailey found Smart and took her into custody, the report said.

Fallis was charged with driving on a suspended driver’s license, fictitious tags, no proof of liability insurance, and failure to yield at stop signs. Smart was charged with fleeing. All charges are misdemeanors and will be heard in district court in March.
