Lyon College baseball

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College Scots baseball team swept a double-header from the Loyola University-New Orleans Wolf Pack 5-3 and 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at Fred Wann Field.

In the first game, Aaron Hurd was 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and had a run batted in. Troy Strack scored a run, Alan West added two runs.

The Scots banged out six hits.

Clayton Burke went the distance for Lyon College. He gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out seven batters.

Hurd doubled in Strack in the bottom of the first inning and West advanced to third. West scored when Hakeem Yatim doubled down the right field line to score West and Hurd and put the Scots up 3-0.

Loyola got a solo home run and added another run in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Scots came back in the bottom of the third when Yatim was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in West. Then Hurd scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2.

In the second game, Lyon College had six runs on 10 hits with Lex Meinderts picking up the win and Dylan Baskins got the save. Meinderts pitched six innings, gave up two earned runs and struck out four batters. Jordan Olivera and Andrew Pitts came in to pitch an inning apiece.

Strack was 1-for-3 with a run scored, West scored a run and went 1-for-3, Hurd was 1-for-4 with a run scored two runs batted in. Alec White picked up an RBI and Tristan Buschow was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Logan Doody was also 2-for-3.

The Scots took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Hurd doubled in Strack and West. White hit a sacrifice grounder to second to score Hurd for Lyon in the first inning.

Loyola got a 2-run homer in the fifth inning, but the Chris Lara scored on a wild pitch. Strack hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Buschow and West singled in pinch-runner Derek Underwood to make it 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth.

The Scots return to the field on Monday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. at Fred Wann Field to take on Loyola University-New Orleans for a single game.

Lyon College rounds out the week with a Tuesday afternoon game at home against Freed-Hardeman at 5 p.m.

Lyon women’s wrestling

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -The Lyon College Women’s wrestling team finished fourth overall at the Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s wrestling championships on Feb. 26.

Lyon College amassed 105 points, 1.5 points behind host Oklahoma City University of 106.5. Texas Wesleyan was first and Wayland Baptist University place second.

Individually, Kelani Corbett of Lyon College won the 191-pound classification by technical fall over Ryann Rumsey of Oklahoma City University (TF 10-0).

Emma De Brum of Lyon College finished second in the women’s 116-pound class. Camille Fournier of Texas Wesleyan University won by tech fall over De Brum TF 10-0. De Brum defeated Carlie Coupier of Texas Wesleyan 10-0.

Alexandrea Banag of Lyon was second in the 136-pound classification.

Banag won by fall over Lindsay Mills of Missouri Baptist University.

Then, Banag won by tech fall over Adriana Orozco of Oklahoma City University 10-0 and won by injury default over Mea Mohler of Texas Wesleyan.

Lady Scots basketball

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College Scots have a chance to win their third American Midwest Conference tournament championship after they defeated the University of Health, Sciences and Pharmacy Eutectics on 70-58 on Friday night at Becknell Gymnasium.

The Scots (27-4) have already qualified for the NAIA National Tournament by clinching their third AMC conference regular-season title in a row.

Jade Giron and Paige Kelley led Lyon College with 18 points each. Kristen Baham scored 11 points and Katie Turner added 10 points in the win.

Giron led Lyon College with nine rebounds, had four steals and dished out seven assists. Marleigh Dodson scored nine points and Allison Byars added four points.

Grace Beyers led UHS&P with 34 points.

The Scots led 13-12 after the first quarter, but Beyers led the Eutectics to a 7-2 lead before Dodson and Giron scored. Byars put in a layup to put

Lyon College in front 8-7. Dodson completed a three-point play for the lead with 1:12 to go in the first period.

The Scots managed some separation in the second quarter by outscoring the Eutectics 21-11.

Kelley completed a traditional three-point play to start the quarter, then Baham made two three-pointers and Katie Turner added two free throws to put Lyon up 34-23 by halftime.

Baham made her third three-pointer of the game in the early stages of the third quarter. Kelley made two baskets in a row and completed another three-point play. Turner hit a jumper with two seconds left to put the Scots ahead 48-39.

UHS&P got within seven points 50-43 early in the fourth period, but Kelley completed her third three-point play. Giron made two steals and two layups in a row and Byars hit a jumper for a 63-51 lead. Giron made another steal and converted the layup, while Turner closed out the game by making four free throws in a row.

The Eutectics dropped to 21-12 overall.
