Lyon College athletics update: baseball, softball results

PARKVILLE, MO. – The Lyon College Scots dropped the second game of a double-header to the Park University Pirates on Friday afternoon, 6-5, ironically the exact same way they lost the first game, on a three-run walk-off homer.

The Scots (11-8) trailed 2-0 when Jayden Cull scored on a passed ball in the top of the second inning. Lyon College took the lead in the top of the fourth inning when Tristan Buschow reached on an error by the Park pitcher that scored Alec White and Cull. Later in the inning, Troy Strack singled to center field to bring in Buschow for a 4-2 lead.

After Park scored in the bottom of the sixth inning to close the gap to one run, Cull hit a sacrifice fly to bring Alan West to make it 5-3 Scots in the top of the seventh.

Park got a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out to walk-off with the doubleheader sweep.

A three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the host Park Pirates a come-from-behind 6-5 win over the Scots in the first game of the double-header.

The Scots (11-8) took the lead in the first inning 2-0 when Alan West reached first on an error and scored Troy Strack. Joe Weatherford scored when White grounded into a double play.

In the top of the third inning, Aaron Hurd hit a solo home run for a 3-0 lead.

Zach Ellis singled to left to score Hakeem Yatim in the top of the fourth inning to put Lyon College up 4-0.

But the Pirates scored six times in the bottom of the sixth inning including a three-run homer.

The Scots had five runs on three hits. Park scored six runs on nine hits.

Scots softball at Gulf Shores tournament

GULF SHORES, AL – The Lyon College Scots softball team played in the Gulf Shores tournament that began on Friday and dropped a 2-0 decision to Central Methodist University and fell in eight innings to Faulkner University 8-6.

In the first game against Central Methodist, the Scots struck out 19 times had left three runners on base. Kassidy Robinson walked and Morgan Englehardt walked twice in the game for Lyon College.

Alyssa Buentello pitched six innings for the Scots and allowed only two runs on six hits. The Scots had no hits in the game.

Against Faulkner, Lyon College led 6-3 until the top of the sixth inning when Faulkner tied the game. Faulkner added two runs in the eighth inning to win the game 8-6.

Georgia Holzer pitched five innings for the Scots and gave up four runs. Alyssa Buentello came in to go the final three innings from the circle.

Faulkner led 3-0 before the Scots came to bat in the bottom of the first inning. Addison Harmon scored on a passed ball, Kassidy Robinson scored on a sacrifice fly from Celsey Wood. Still in the bottom of the first, MK Duffield singled to left field to bring in Morgan Englehardt and Jasmine Carlos for a 4-3 Lyon College lead.

The Scots got two more runs in the bottom of the second inning when Englehardt singled to center field to bring in Harmon and Robinson for a 6-3 lead.

Faulkner homered in the fifth and a two-run double in the sixth tied the game. Then in the eighth inning, Faulkner scored on a wild pitch and a single.

On Saturday morning, the Lyon College Scots softball team led 2-1 after the first inning, but fell behind 9-2 and eventually lost to the Brenau University Tigers at the Gulf Coast Invite tournament.

The Scots (0-9) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning when Morgan Englehardt reached first on an error by the Brenau right fielder that scored Addison Harmon and Kassidy Robinson for a 2-1 lead.

The Tigers (7-5) scored five runs in the top of the second inning on a grand slam home run, then added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to go up 9-2.

Trinity Arrambide singled to right field to bring in Emily Martinez and Harmon reached first on an error that allowed Arrambide to score.

For the game, Robinson was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Clesey Wood was 2-for-4 at the plate, Arrambide was 1-for 3 with a run scored, Melanie Mooney was 1-for-3, Georgia Holzer went 1-for-4, Martinez was 1-for-4 with a run scored, Harmon scored a run and Englehardt got two runs batted in.

The Lyon Scots softball team finished their games in the Gulf Coast Invite tournament with a 3-1 loss to Thomas University on Saturday afternoon.

The Scots (0-10) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Celsey Wood scored on a double by Georgia Holzer.

Thomas University took the lead in the fourth inning with two runs and tacked on another run in the fifth inning for the win.

Wood was 2-for-4 in the game with one run scored. Addison Harmon was 1-for-4, Holzer was 2-for-3 with a run batted in and Trinity Arrambide was 1-for-2 for Lyon College.
