For student Quiwei Chen (pictured), 44, obtaining her GED is just the first step in achieving her educational goals. Chen entered the Adult Education program at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville (UACCB) distance learning program in November 2021.
Through the distance learning program, students have a variety of methods of instruction to choose from to meet their needs and schedules.
“UACCB offers students individualized educational plans and provides support through a career coach along with regular check-ins from instructors,” said Adult Education program director Becky Warren said.
For Chen, who obtained her GED in December 2021, distance learning provided her a way to find success without having to attend in-person sessions. She completed her coursework at home and only came to campus to take tests.
Warren said students are expected to attend an orientation that provides students with an introduction to the program and outlines the expectations for the student and the support that program personnel provides.
“UACCB helped me choose a major and apply for admission to the college,” Chen said. “They helped me move forward an important step.”
Chen is enrolled in pre-requisite courses for the nursing program. Her goal is to be a registered nurse so she can care for people in need. This became her goal after seeing the need for skilled nursing care in her home country of China.
Chen said, “When you get well educated, you can have better job opportunities. Never give up, keep going!”
The UACCB Adult Education program serves students in Independence and Sharp counties. For more information, call (870) 612-2164 or visit www.uaccb.edu.
