The Valley View Lady Blazers have had a stranglehold on the 4A-3 regular season championship ever since the Lady Southerners joined the conference, Tuesday the Lady Southerners took a big step towards breaking their grip, as they split the conference doubleheader and got their first-ever win over the softball Lady Blazers.
The first game looked to be more of the same dominance the Blazers have shown the 4A-3 for several years, scoring one run in each of the first three innings to lead 3-0.
A disastrous fourth inning, with fielding and throwing errors for the Lady Southerners led to five Valley View runs and an 8-0 lead, that was more than the Lady Blazers needed to seal the win. The Southerners managed to get only three hits in the 8-1 loss.
The nightcap would see a much different Lady Southerners team, as Grace Lawellin would handcuff the Lady Blazers from the circle and a big three-run first inning would propel the Lady Southerners to a 3-2 win.
Breanna Rea led off the first inning with a double, Lexie Dale and Grace Lawelling followed with a single and a double, with Lawellins driving in two runs. Lundyn Foree drew a walk and Krislynn Duncan laid down a sacrifice bunt to drive in the third run.
Valley View managed to score one run in the second and one run in the fifth to make it 3-2. Lawellin retired the 1-2-3 hitters for the Lady Blazers in order for the 3-2 win. Lawellin went seven innings for the win and drove in two runs. Chaney McCants made a diving play against the fence in right field, in the seventh inning to preserve the win for the Lady Southerners.
