A longtime football coach has been named the new head coach for Melbourne High School
According to post on its social media page, the Melbourne School Board has accepted the recommendation to name Stuart (Stu) Smith as the new head football coach.
Smith brings 36 years of football coaching experience with three seasons at Van Buren and 33 seasons as an assistant football coach at Batesville. His roles included offensive and defensive coordinator in football.
Smith has also coached baseball and track and field. During his coaching career thus far, Smith was assistant or head coach for 11 state championships and 32 conference championships in track and field, baseball, and football.
While making the recommendation, Melbourne Superintendent Dr. Danny Brackett said, “He will bring stability and credibility to our program and we are excited he is joining Melbourne School District.”
Smith has served two terms as State Representative for District 63. He announced his decision to not run for a third term in September of 2021.
