Scorching temperatures and dry weather prompted area county judges to issue burn bans on Wednesday morning.
According to the Arkansas Forestry Commission, Independence, Izard, and Stone counties instituted burn bans this morning.
Outside burning is prohibited during burn bans due to the hot, dry conditions. The bans are in effect until further notice.
According to a KAIT meteorologist, Batesville is on a 23-day streak without rain.
The smothering heat will continue to blanket the region through at least Friday or Saturday with any possible rain chances listed as “spotty,” according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say heat index values from 105 to 110 degrees are expected through portions of central, eastern, north central, southeast, southwest, and western Arkansas.
And not much relief is expected in the overnight hours with temperatures dropping to only the 70s.
It appears there could be a small break from the heat this weekend into early next week. A couple of cold fronts will try to move into the state from the north. These fronts are expected to trigger isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms, followed by slightly cooler air.
Mountain home ended its 23 day streak without rain yesterday. Other streaks still active:
