Batesville Community Theatre (BCT) has scheduled its second show for the organization’s new performing arts center in Town Plaza Shopping Center.

“After a sell-out crowd for our first show, ‘Star Spangled Girl,’ we are thrilled to be able to welcome our supporters to another fabulous show, ‘Once on this Island,’” said Whitney Coleman Massey who directed “Star Spangled Girl.”

“Once on This Island” is a coming-of-age, one-act stage musical with a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty.

Based on the 1985 novel, ”My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl” by Rosa Guy, “Once on This Island” is a Caribbean-set retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, “The Little Mermaid.” It concerns a peasant girl in the French Antilles who falls in love with a rich boy and makes a deal with the gods to save his life.

“We sang a couple of songs from the musical in our ‘All Together Now’ show in November, and we fell in love with it,” said Kristian Ameigh, who is directing the show.

The newly renovated building that houses the BCT Performing Arts Center is the first permanent performance space for BCT since its inception in 1971.

“After 50 years, we don’t have to roam, we have a home,” said Suzanne Magouyrk, who has been involved with BCT since 1980.

The cast for “Once on This Island” includes Charlie Ann Wade, Cynthia Carius, Jeanette Gibbs, Kristian Ameigh, Karis Bufford Ford, Kaylee Fuller, Rebecca Ward, Sarah Harmon, Savannah Warren, Stephen Norris, Tyler Sarracino, and Westley Gibbs.

“Once on This Island” will be on the stage at the BCT Performing Arts Center, 1295 E. Main, on Aug. 19 and 20 at 7 p.m., and August 21 at 2 p.m.

Tickets will be $20 at the door for adults, and $10 for 12 and under. Tickets include beverages and light snacks.
