The first 5A game in Southside history started with a recovered onside kick and ended in a 36-0 win over the Forrest City Mustangs at Stewart Field in Southside Friday night. It was GO GOLD night for the Southerners as they helped raise awareness for Childhood Cancer.
The football Southerners, who were bumped to Class 5A by the Arkansas Activities Association in the offseason, were playing host to their first ever 5A East conference opponent and were looking to get off to a fast start in front of a sold-out home crowd.
The opening kickoff by Brandon Lopez traveled 11 yards and bounced off the chest of a Mustang defender and Caden Rowlett recovered at the Southside 49-yard line, and five plays later, Seth Case scored the Southerners’ first touchdown of the night. And with the two-point conversion, the Southerners would lead 8-0.
Forrest City would fumble on the next drive and Savion Hall recovered for the Southerners. It took only five plays, and the Southerners had a 15-0 lead and never looked back. Isaac Wallis scored his first career touchdown before halftime and Southside would lead 22-0 at the break.
Touchdowns by Seth Case (14 carries for 112 yards) and a seven-yard touchdown pass from Chase Duncan to tight end Jaylon Jennings capped the scoring for the Southerners who moved to 1-0 in 5A east play and 3-1 overall on the season.
The Southerners go on the road to take on Wynne Friday night, one of the 5A’s top-ranked teams.
