Southside travelled to 5A East preseason favorite Wynne Friday night to take on the state’s seventh-ranked team.

Wynne scored the game’s first touchdown on a four-play, 63-yard drive that took 2:10, but missed the extra point, and led 6-0.

The Southerners answered on their first drive of the night going 62 yards and scoring on a three-yard pass from Chase Duncan to Cannon Chaffin. Wynne’s second touchdown came before the first quarter was over, scoring with 3:04 left on a five-yard run from the quarterback, and converting the two-point conversion to take a 14-7 lead.

Wynne would increase their lead only 23 seconds into the second quarter on freshman standout AV Jones’ 19-yard touchdown run. With Wynne now leading 21-7, the Southerners reeled off an eight-play, 80-yard drive capped by a one-yard dive by Luis Calhoun to cut the lead back to 7, 21-14.

Wynne went 51 yards in less than a minute with their fullback Kobe Davis scoring on a 16-yard run and taking a 28-14 lead.

With 4:28 left before halftime, the Southerners would get another shot starting the drive at their own 33-yard line and marching down the field, before coming up short when Chase Duncan was intercepted on the two-yard line to end the half.

Neither would score in the third quarter as both teams made defensive adjustments at halftime and clamped down on the offenses. The fourth quarter would see Wynne score first on a three-yard run by Davis, and take a 35-14 lead.

The Southerners answered right back going 65 yards in five plays with Chase Duncan scampering for a 38-yard touchdown run, cutting the lead back to two scores, 35-21.

The Southerners attempted on an onside kick which was recovered by the Yellow Jackets at the 45-yard line and scored three plays later, and the Southerners ran out of time on their final drive, ending the game at 42-21.

The Southerners fall to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in 5A East conference play. Southside will face Brookland at home Friday night at 7 p.m.
