Community supporters of the Batesville Pioneers will celebrate the unveiling of Jedediah Bates, a nine-foot-tall wood-carved Pioneer statue, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday afternoon at Batesville High School Charter (BHSC).

The ceremony, sponsored by the Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC), will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the BHSC lobby entrance. It will be part of the week’s Homecoming festivities for the Pioneers, and light refreshments will be served.

The carving of Bates, based on the original Pioneers mascot, was created by Oklahoma artist Clayton Coss using wood from west Batesville’s Poke Bayou. The project was the idea of BHS graduates from the 50s and 60s who wanted to “remind staff and students of the pride and courage of a Pioneer,” according to a BACC release.
