The public is invited to attend a Tuesday, Nov. 1, session of the 2022 Midterm Elections seminar taught by Batesville native James L. “Skip” Rutherford III.

The class will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Bevens Music Room on the Lyon College campus, 2300 Highland Rd., Batesville. The public session will take place one week before the Nov. 8 elections.

Rutherford, Dean Emeritus of the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, in Little Rock, is a member of the Lyon College Board of Trustees and is teaching the course for free as a public service.

“Each student in the seminar is following a competitive United States Senate race,” Rutherford said. “Students present updates on their campaigns weekly focusing on a variety of subjects, including major issues – national and local – and recent polls.”

On Nov. 1, each student will give a three- to five-minute synopsis of the assigned campaign and will make an election day prediction. At the conclusion of all the presentations, those in attendance can ask individual or group questions.

Rutherford also will make remarks and answer questions.

In addition to the campaigns, students in the course also have weekly class discussions about a specific topic, Rutherford said. The topic is provided a week in advance to allow for student research and preparation. To date, the students have discussed abortion, crime, immigration, inflation, Russia-Ukraine, and student loan forgiveness. On Tuesday, Oct. 11, the class will discuss climate.

“On Nov. 1, we will not have a specific topic, but we will discuss matters related to Election Day, Nov. 8, including the projected makeup of the new Senate and House,” Rutherford said.

Class members also have weekly conversations about timely current events such as recreational marijuana in Arkansas and Hurricane Ian.

Rutherford, who serves on the boards of the Arkansas Children’s Hospital System, the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement, and the Arkansas Newspaper Foundation, has been active in numerous campaigns and initiatives at the local, state, and national levels.
