A building that at one time was part of the Batesville School District campus was demolished and burned today.

The building, located on Elm Street behind the Batesville School District Administration Offices on Water Street, was owned by the county and was demolished to make room for the new Independence County Senior Citizens Program building, which will be constructed on the property.

A large plume of black smoke from the controlled burn could be seen for miles. The Batesville Fire Department was on hand to ensure the burn went smoothly, and workers from the Independence County Road Department assisted in the demolition of the building.

The building also housed the NADC Head Start Center and Pre-Head Start program in Batesville.

Funding for the new Independence County Senior Citizens Program building will come from the American Rescue Act.
