Men’s basketball and women’s softball are coming to Arkansas State University-Newport.
ASU-Newport is the newest member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). ASU-Newport received the news of its acceptance last week, according to a release from the college.
With this new affiliation, ASU-Newport will begin the process of starting two sports teams, including men’s basketball and women’s softball. These teams will participate in Region 2 of the NJCAA at the Division II level.
ASU-Newport is joining several other Arkansas 2-year colleges, including ASU-Mid South, ASU-Mountain Home, National Park College, Northwest Arkansas Community College, and South Arkansas Community College.
According to the release from ASU-Newport, the mission of the NJCAA is to promote, govern and foster a competitive environment for two-year college athletics. NJCAA also emphasizes the importance of the academic, athletic, and community involvement goals of all student-athletes.
“We are pleased to announce the addition of ASU-Newport as one of our newest NJCAA members,” said Dr. Christopher J. Parker, president & CEO of the NJCAA. “This addition not only allows the NJCAA to grow our presence in Arkansas, but we’re more excited about the new opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the collegiate level.”
ASU-Newport said the school is excited to see what the addition of these sports teams brings to the college as well as surrounding communities. Chancellor Dr. Johnny M. Moore said this will open the doors of higher education to even more students.
“ASU-Newport is thrilled to have this opportunity with the NJCAA and provide access to student-athletes so they can compete while getting a quality education,” Dr. Moore said. “As a former student-athlete, I know the positive impact college sports can have on an individual and their future. These sports teams will allow us to reach even more potential students and help them fulfill their goals.”
