The Mountain View Yellowjackets defeated the Hoxie Mustangs 71-62 on Saturday afternoon to clinch the Class 3 A-2 conference championship.
The Yellowjackets jumped out to an early 21-10 lead after the first quarter. Leading 40-24 at halftime, Mountain View started the third quarter with a 9-3 run getting two 2-pointers from senior Beck Morrow, one from senior Camyn Vickers, and a 3-pointer from junior Collin Johnson to build their largest lead of the game 49-27.
Hoxie battled back, cutting the Yellowjackets lead to 66-62 with 1:24 to play, but Mountain View would hold off the Mustangs for the victory and the conference title.
The Yellowjackets shot 54% from three-point range getting four 3-pointers each from Morrow and junior Trevor Downs, three from Johnson, and one each from Vickers and Sam Fletcher.
Mountain View was led by Morrow who had 26 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds, Vickers added 13 points, Downs 12 points, Johnson nine points, and six assists, and Fletcher five points.
The Yellowjackets improved to 19-7 overall and 12-2 in conference play. They will be the number 1 seed in the Class 3A-2 District Tournament at Cave City later this week. The win also qualifies the Yellowjackets for the Regional Tournament next week, which will be in Mountain View.
Earlier in the day, the Mountain View Lady Yellowjackets wrapped up their regular season with a 58-21 victory over the Hoxie Lady Mustangs. The Lady Yellowjackets cruised on the hot shooting of senior Kaitlyn McCarn and freshman Jaci Cooper, both scoring 23 points and combining for 11 3-pointers, seven by Cooper and four by McCarn. McCarn also added 11 rebounds, while Ellie Akins added 6 points, and Emma Akins 5 points.
The Lady Yellowjackets improved to 18-9 overall and 10-4 in conference play. They will be the number 3 seed in the Class 3A-2 District Tournament at Cave City later this week.
On Friday night, Mountain View swept Walnut Ridge with the Lady Yellowjackets defeating the Lady Bobcats 48-26 in the first game and the Yellowjackets defeating the Bobcats 77-54.
The Lady Yellowjackets led the Lady Bobcats 30-11 at half-time and built a 44-15 lead after the third quarter coasting to victory. The Lady Yellowjackets were led by McCarn, who had 19 points and five rebounds, Cooper added 14 points, and Torianne McCarty six points.
The Yellowjackets controlled the game throughout, building their biggest lead of 24 points, setting up the opportunity to clinch the conference title on Saturday.
The Yellowjackets were led by Vickers who had 21 points, going 5-5 from three-point range, Johnson added 15 points and eight assists, Downs 14 points, Fletcher eight points, Morrow seven points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds, and six points each by Jack Newton and Austin McDonald.
