The Mountain View Lady Yellowjackets advanced to the semi-finals of the 3A-2 District Tournament with a 65-56 victory over the Newport Lady Greyhounds at Cave City High School Wednesday night.
It was a tale of two halves, as Mountain View controlled the first half building a 35-18 advantage with a balanced scoring attack as five different Lady Yellowjackets had scored 5 or more at halftime.
However, in the second half, Newport battled back, outscoring the Lady Yellowjackets 38-30, as they got 15 second-half points each from Sadie Washam and Raigan Head to close the Mountain View lead. Mountain View would get a couple of big defensive stops late and hold on to a 65-56 victory over the Lady Greyhounds.
Mountain View was led by Kaitlyn McCarn with 23 points, seven assists, and six steals. Emma Akins added 12 points and nine rebounds; Torianne McCarty with 10 points; and Jaci Cooper and Ellie Akins with nine points each, as the Lady Yellowjackets improved to 19-9 overall on the season. They will advance to the semi-final round of the District Tournament, where they will play the Melbourne Lady Bearkatz Friday at 7 p.m.
Newport was led by Head, who had 20 points and seven rebounds. Washam added 15 points, and Antaniya Davis scored 14 points and made 10 rebounds as the Lady Greyhounds’ season ended with a record of 11-16.
