Arkansas State University-Newport has named its first athletic director.
The school announced Thursday the appointment of Brad Phillips (pictured) as its first A.D.
Phillips will be responsible for overseeing the development and success of ASU-Newport’s athletic department, which includes women’s softball and men’s basketball, the school said in a release announcing the appointment.
Phillips has over 21 years of experience, which ranges from coaching at the high school and college levels, administration, and recruitment. He comes to ASUN from Crowley’s Ridge College, where he served as the head Women’s Basketball Coach for three years, leading the Lady Pioneers to multiple conference and national tournament appearances.
Phillips also coached both men’s and women’s basketball teams at the University of Arkansas-Cossatot, where his team earned 25 wins in the Colts’ first year in NJCAA Division 2.
“I am extremely excited to be the first Athletic Director at ASUN,” said Coach Phillips. “Northeast Arkansas is a great area for recruiting, and we already have commitments from some very talented student-athletes. I want to thank the administration of ASUN for giving me this amazing opportunity. I’m excited to work with Coach Kevin Pierce and Coach Logan Nutt to bring competitive athletic programs to this institution.”
Phillips holds a bachelor’s degree from Williams Baptist University and a master’s degree from Emporia State University. As an athlete, he played high school basketball at Maynard High School in Maynard, Ark. He also competed at the college level for Crowley’s Ridge College (Arkansas), Brown Mackie Junior College (Kansas), and former Ambassador University (Texas).
“Coach Phillips brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the Aviator Athletic Program,” said Dr. Johnny M. Moore, ASUN Chancellor. “We are confident that under his leadership, our athletic program will thrive and continue to grow.”
ASU-Newport is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and will compete in Region 2 at the Division II level beginning this fall.
