Artist, Lyon College alumnus, and Newport native Shea Hembrey (pictured above), ‘96, has created his latest art installation, “Rain Dance,” on the Lyon College campus.
There will be an artist talk on Thursday, April 20, at 5:30 p.m. in the Nucor Auditorium of the Lyon Business and Economics Building on the Lyon College campus, 2300 Highland Rd. in Batesville.
“Growing up on a farm, precipitation was a constant conversation,” said Hembrey. “As an avid gardener, this conversation continues throughout my adulthood.”
Hembrey’s use of elongated plastic bags to temporarily suspend water acts as a surrogate for the increasing severity of human interference in nature.
“Water is always in transit,” said Hembrey. “Here in these installations, the water is temporarily suspended: neither allowed to fall immediately or evaporate slowly and rise. Artificially held by plastic, the natural flow of things is impeded.”
Hembrey invites the community to keep an eye out for the installations as they traverse the Lyon College campus.
“Think of the gush and trickle of time. Think of the water waiting to cascade again to bring life, to cleanse,” Hembrey said.
