The Batesville Pioneers quiz bowl team earned the 5A State Championship title in April, making this back-to-back state title for the team under the leadership of head coach Bryce Grant.
The Pioneers faced Valley View in the finals and defeated them by a final score of 350 – 250.
The team is made up of senior Ty Bishop, senior Dylan Story, junior Alexander Tenace (who was named MVP), junior Charles Stinnett, sophomore Quentin Hanson, freshman Gwen Goodwin, freshman Asher Stroud, freshman Brayden Johnson, freshman Taylor Bishop, freshman Mai-Lan Ho, assistant coach Noah Chaffin (2022 State Championship winning team), and Grant.
“I am extremely proud of my students,” said Grant. “They’ve put in a lot of hours studying, researching, and practicing. Their efforts have paid off.”
The previous year the Pioneers won by 290-215 in the 2022 finals. Prior to that, the last championship win was in 2007, when the current team’s head coach, Grant, was a senior.
Current board member and former teacher for Batesville, Kathy West, was the team’s coach in 2007.
The Arkansas Governor’s Quiz Bowl Association sponsors the Quiz Bowl each year. The event was aired on Arkansas PBS stations. Scroll down to watch the competition.
On a side note, Grant was also named the certified teacher of the year at Batesville High School Charter, voted on by his peers.
