The Sharp County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the vandalism of a county church.
Sharp County Sheriff Shane Russell says the Maxville Missionary Baptist Church in Cave City was vandalized between 10 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday.
Russell reports the unidentified subject spray-painted “multiple satanic symbols” on the building and a van parked outside.
“This type of criminal act will not be tolerated in Sharp County,” Russell said in a media release. “Regardless of your spiritual beliefs, Sharp County will uphold the First Amendment constitutional rights of the freedom of religion. We will also have zero tolerance for any church being vandalized or purposely damaged, and the ones responsible for this incident will be located and prosecuted.”
The sheriff says he’s ordered extra patrol around the church and that his department is contacting other churches about the incident.
Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the sheriff’s office at (870) 994-7356 or Sharp County dispatch at (870) 994-2211.
