In the last report to Independence County Quorum Court members, the one-cent countywide sales tax collection is slightly under 2022 in the year-to-date collection.

In May, the one-cent tax brought in $346,519, down $8,641 from the May 2022 collections of $355,160. May was the third month in a row this year that collections were above the $345,000 mark.

The figures represent sales done in March, sent to the state in April, and returned to the county in May.

Another figure worth noting is the “Claimed Rebates” total for Independence County, year to date, of $643,695. Last year the “Claimed Rebates” total to date was $167,692.

Also, all county accounts — County General, County Road, Solid Waste, and Emergency 9-1-1-Fund — are in the black, with Solld Waste carrying the largest surplus of just over $1.5 million.

The UACCB and the Fire Departments’ quarter-cent sales taxes each brought in just under $172,000.

When you look at each department’s amount of budget spent, you see the Shooting Range has spent just over 54% of its budget, the “ever busy” district court has spent 47.5%, and the road department has spent 35% of its budget. County Judge Kevin Jeffery’s office has only spent 24% of its budget, and the circuit court has spent 14.17% of its budget.

The bottom line is this: Independence County appears to be in good financial shape.
