UPDATE, June 23, 2023, 11:25 a.m.: Batesville Fire Chief Mark McCollum told White River Now’s Gary Bridgman on Friday morning that the fire was in a single-family home, and it’s believed to have started in the attic. The chief said damage was extensive, and firefighters were on the scene from 8:20 p.m. to 11:20 p.m.
The family was not home at the time, and there were no injuries.
A woman who posted on White River Now’s Facebook page late Thursday night said the home belonged to her family. She also noted that the family was not home at the time of the fire, and all members, including their pets, were okay.
EARLIER: Batesville firefighters and other local emergency agencies are on the scene of a structure fire on 14th Street behind the Kroger store.
A thick plume of black smoke could be seen throughout town as the structure looked to be fully engulfed in flames at the scene.
This is a developing story, but there are currently no reports of fatalities or injuries.

The Batesville Fire Department has been busy over the past week. Firefighters battled three fires last Saturday in west Batesville that are being investigated as arson. Officials say charges in those fires are expected to be filed soon. Click here for more on that story from White River Now.
