A severe storm system brought strong winds and baseball-sized hail and caused a string of power outages as it barrelled through the region Sunday afternoon.
Structural damage was reported throughout the area. A steeple was shown torn from one Cave City church on a social media post, and the roof of the former Newark Elementary School looked to be mangled and twisted in images sent to White River Now. One Newark resident said the sound and the wind near the building as the storm passed were “unbelievable.”
In Mountain View, large hailstones slammed through the skylights of the town’s Walmart, sending customers and associates running for cover. There were also multiple reports of damaged vehicles and windshields.
No injuries or fatalities were reported in the area. However, two deaths were reported in Carlisle, Ark., after a tree fell onto a home.
According to PowerOutage.us, a website that collects, records, and aggregates live power outage data, around 800 customers in Independence County were still without power at 10 a.m. on Monday, along with 640 customers in Stone County, 391 in Sharp County, 156 in Lawrence County, 124 in Izard County, and just over 70 in Jackson County.
A Mountain View reader provided the below images of hailstones from yesterday’s storms.
