Gary Wayne Hopkins

Nov. 20, 1954 – July 20, 2023

Gary Wayne Hopkins, 68, of Newport, departed this life on July 20, 2023. Born in Grubbs, Ark., on November 20, 1954, to Earl Lee and Lillie Mae Hopkins, Gary grew up surrounded by the warmth of family and the beauty of the land. From an early age, he exhibited a remarkable talent for woodwork, a skill that would become a defining aspect of his life. He honed his abilities as a machinist and mechanic, finding joy in fixing and crafting with his hands.

Gary’s dedication and hard work led him to the steel industry, where he spent thirty-five years contributing his talents and expertise. But Gary was more than just a steelworker; he was a farmer too. He possessed a deep connection with the land, nurturing it to yield its bounty and cherishing the simple pleasures of life it provided.

However, there was one passion that truly set Gary’s heart aflame – duck hunting. With every approaching duck hunting season, his excitement would reach new heights. The thrill of the hunt, the camaraderie with fellow hunters, and the beauty of nature in those moments brought him immense happiness. It was during those times that he felt truly alive, surrounded by the splendor of the outdoors. As much as Gary loved his work and hobbies, his greatest source of pride and joy was his family. For thirty-two years, he shared his life with his loving wife, Sandra, whose unwavering support and companionship filled his days with love and happiness.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-two years, Sandra Hopkins of Newport; daughter, Kim Roberson Viebrooks (Jason) of Rogers; granddaughters, Katherine, Olivia and Mary Elizabeth Viebrooks of Rogers; his brother, Danny Ray Hopkins (Beth) of Tuckerman; his sister, Sheila Hopkins Haskett of Arkadelphia; his sister-in-law, Gail Strickland Clark (Noel) of Bryant; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Jerry Montgomery, Brett Montgomery, Preston Aitkins, Blake Hutchinson, Cole Ethridge, Clint Ethridge and Michael Cossey. Honorary pallbearers are Nathan Bennett, Randy and Sherilyn Bennett, Jeff and Donna Hohn, Ron Hogan, Rhea Dennis and Johnny Ivy and Marty Hutchinson.

The service was held Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Dillinger Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Rick Herring officiating. Burial was at Blue Springs Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
