The Old Independence Regional Museum (OIRM) in Batesville is hosting a new exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution centered around American democracy.
“Voices and Votes” is based on a major exhibition currently on display at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. According to the Smithsonian, the exhibit features historical and contemporary photos; educational and archival video; multimedia interactives with short games and additional footage, photos, and information; and historical objects like campaign souvenirs, voter memorabilia, and protest material.
An OIRM members only-preview of “Voices and Votes” was held last week. First-generation immigrant Cassia Oliveira (pictured below), a biology professor at Lyon College, spoke to guests about her journey to citizenship and the importance of the democratic process.
“Voices and Votes” will be on display at the Old Independence Regional Museum through Sept. 1. OIRM hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. The museum is located at 380 S. 9th St. in Batesville.
