Independence County Senior Citizens Program announces cooling sites

Officials at the Independence County Senior Citizens Program have announced their locations will be used as cooling sites during business hours while the area is under heat advisories issued by the National Weather Service.

  • The Batesville location at 1590 E. College will be open from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • The Newark location at 130 14th St. will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday and Wednesday.
  • The Oil Trough location at 50 North Main St. will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday.

 

Extreme hot temperatures will continue through the next seven days, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures could reach 100 degrees at more locations as the period progresses, particularly if rainfall is not seen in the coming days. Heat index values will also likely reach 105 to 110 degrees for most of the area.
