The Batesville High School Charter Facebook page shared a story from Jonesboro’s Region 8 News about a recent life-saving incident at the school’s campus.
According to Maddie Sexton’s story posted on the Region 8 News website yesterday, a student in Constance Johnson’s social studies class fell from their desk to the floor on Sept. 7 while Johnson was teaching.
The report said Johnson saw the student was turning blue as if they weren’t getting oxygen. Johnson immediately instructed her students to help by calling 911, finding the school nurse, and sending someone to the office to inform the administration.
Principal Stacey Lindsey said in Sexton’s report the student was not breathing and had no pulse. School Nurse Brandi Fleetwood administered an automated external defibrillator (AED) to the student while Assistant Principal Kevin Bledsoe followed with chest compressions. Lindsey told Sexton that the student was semi-revived within three minutes of the event. Within seven minutes of the student falling, the report said an ambulance had arrived at the school and took the student to White River Medical Center.
Lindsey told Sexton the student experienced a cardiac event and is recovering. The principal credited her staff and their training for such events. She said all staff members at BHSC are trained in AED, CPR, Narcan, and more.
