UPDATE: Authorities report Stingley was found and detained on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Authorities are searching for a fugitive from Independence County after he ran from police in Cherokee Village early Thursday.

According to a report from the Spring River Chronicle, an officer spotted a man walking near Peace Lutheran Church in Cherokee Village. When the officer approached the subject, identified as Cory Joe Stingley, 48, he ran.

The Chronicle said Stingley, who has a lengthy criminal history, is wanted in Independence County for a failure to appear warrant issued on Wednesday. His charges, stemming from a 2022 incident, include third-degree escape, theft by receiving, and felon in possession of a firearm. The Chronicle said there is no bond hold on Stingley — which is why he likely ran from the officer.

Schools in the area were placed at an elevated security threat, but after receiving more information, the security threat status was placed back to normal, according to the Chronicle.

If anyone sees Cory Joe Stingley, please contact the Cherokee Village Police Department at (870) 257-5225 or the Sharp County Sheriff’s Department at (870) 994-7356.
