Arkansas State Police have released more information regarding Tuesday afternoon’s deadly 16-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 67 in Jackson County.

According to the state police fatality report, smoke from a nearby field fire covered all four highway lanes. As vehicles entered the smoke, a chain-reaction crash occurred in the northbound lanes around the 99-mile marker. All of the involved vehicles, which included automobiles and semis, came to a rest on or near the northbound traffic lanes, the report said.

Thomas Blevins, 68, of Logan, Ohio, and Terry Lutz, 55, of Somerset, Ohio, were killed when their 2017 Chevrolet Express van was involved in the pile-up, which occurred around 2:15 p.m. Six other people were listed as injured.

All four lanes of U.S. Highway 67 were closed while authorities and crews were on the scene. At least three medical helicopters landed on the highway to help transport the injured. All lanes were reopened by 10 p.m.

One driver caught up in the smoke provided an exclusive video made during the incident to Region 8 News. Click here to see the Region 8 report.
