A routine traffic stop turned into a high-speed pursuit late Friday night when a Stone County Deputy attempted to pull over a 2010 Honda Civic.
According to a release from Stone County Sheriff Brandon Long, the vehicle’s driver, identified as Caleb Brady Gurley (pictured below), 27, of Decatur, Ala., accelerated the Civic to speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour after briefly pulling to the right side of the road.
Despite attempts to deploy spike strips, the Civic continued evading authorities, including Stone County Deputies, the Mountain View Police Department, and the Arkansas State Police. The Arkansas State Police eventually took the lead, and the chase concluded just inside Independence County, with the suspect’s vehicle leaving the roadway and colliding into an embankment.
Gurley and his passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and were transported to White River Medical Center. Gurley was later discharged and taken into custody, booked at the Stone County Detention Center on various charges, including fleeing, aggravated assault, driving while intoxicated, driving on a suspended license, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance (less than 4 oz), and unrelated outstanding warrants.
As of now, no bond has been set for Gurley by a judge. The ongoing investigation involves collaboration between the Arkansas State Police and the Stone County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Brandon Long expressed gratitude to the Independence County Sheriff’s Office, Mountain View Police Department, and Arkansas State Police for their assistance.
