Three Fulton County Detention Center inmates are facing charges after allegedly attempting to start a fire inside the facility last month.
Steven Hamilton, Edward Hoyer, and Chandler Carlo each face a misdemeanor charge of arson and a felony charge of impairing the operation of a vital public facility. Hamilton and Hoyer are also being charged as habitual offenders.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the trio allegedly damaged electrical outlets in their cell pod on Dec. 16 by inserting various items, including shaved pencil lead, causing sparks and a burning smell. The affidavit said jail staff noticed the odor and identified a tampered outlet upon investigation.
Security footage reviewed by investigators captured Carlo shaving down pencil lead while Hamilton blocked the camera for Hoyer as he inserted an object into the socket, sparking twice. Large amounts of shaved lead were subsequently found inside the outlets.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
