Sunday’s snowfall brought more dangerous winter conditions throughout the state as temperatures settled in the teens and below. Forecasters say a return to above-freezing conditions won’t happen until Wednesday afternoon when the high is expected to reach 38. (Click here for the forecast from the National Weather Service.)

A winter weather advisory is in effect until noon Monday, while a wind chill advisory remains in effect until noon Tuesday.

Warming centers have been open throughout the state, including in Batesville at the First United Methodist Church Grammar House and Mountain View at First United Methodist Church’s Kemp Hall. (The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management has also compiled a list of warming centers throughout the state. It can be viewed by clicking here.)

On Monday morning, snow-covered highways blanketed the Arkansas Department of Transportation’s (ARDOT) iDriveArkansas online map, with some ice-covered highways noted south of Little Rock. Almost two inches of snow was recorded in the Batesville area.

Arkansas State Police said snowy conditions were prevalent when a Searcy man died in a one-vehicle accident on Highway 13 in White County Sunday afternoon. According to the Arkansas State Police Fatality Report, John Gerke, 59, was killed when his northbound Ford F250 crossed the center line and crashed into a tree after leaving the roadway. A passenger, Heather Gerke, 47, was injured in the accident and taken to Unity Health in Searcy.
