A capital murder charge was filed Friday morning against the Mountain View man accused of killing a Stone County Sheriff’s deputy on Jan. 2.

According to the arrest affidavit for 52-year-old Clinton Craig Hefton (pictured), Deputy Justin Smith went to Hefton’s Sawmill Road address with a misdemeanor terroristic threatening warrant from the Stone County Sheriff’s Department. When Smith approached the residence on foot, Hefton opened the door and began firing multiple rounds at the deputy, the affidavit said.

Deputy Smith returned fire while retreating towards his vehicle for cover, but was struck several times. The affidavit said Hefton continued to fire on the deputy after he made it back to the driver’s seat of his patrol vehicle.

A backup officer who arrived on the scene fired one round at Hefton, who retreated inside and barricaded himself for a short time before surrendering to law enforcement.

Clinton C. Hefton is currently being held without bond on one count of capital murder.
