Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has informed Independence County Judge Kevin Jeffery that the county has been awarded a $100,000 FUN Park Grant to upgrade Desha Community Park.

The grant, recommended by the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism’s Outdoor Recreation Grants Advisory Committee, will fund new play equipment and improve access to the park.

In a post on his social media, Jeffery credited the assistance of Mitzi Hargan of the White River Planning & Development District and the Independence County Quorum Court in applying for the grant opportunity. Jeffery, along with Hargan and representatives of the Desha Park Board, met on-site with the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage & Tourism to explain the need for the grant and how residents could benefit from the park improvements.

The Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism will work with Independence County officials to finalize the grant agreement and disbursement of funds. Construction on the park improvements is expected to begin later this year.

The FUN Park Grant program provides funding to Arkansas communities with populations under 2,500 to develop and improve public outdoor recreation facilities.
