Above and below: Independence County Judge Kevin Jeffery forwarded images of the Brock Mountain blaze Sunday night.

According to Independence County Judge Kevin Jeffery, effective immediately, Independence County is under a burn ban. Other counties that have instituted a burn ban include Searcy County, Van Buren County, and White County. (To follow burn bans designated by the county, click here.)

Four different forest fires kept local fire departments on high alert this weekend.

Independence County Judge Kevin Jeffery told White River Now Monday morning that fires were reported north of Cushman, on Red Bell Drive off Sandtown Road, on the White River northeast of Sherrill Drive, and on Brock Mountain near the Independence and Cleburne County lines. Jeffery also noted an estimated 500-600 acres were affected. A fire near Lafferty in Izard County was also reported.

Jeffery said that flare-ups in both the Brock Mountain area and north of Cushman occurred earlier Monday morning, but both were contained.

No injuries have been reported in the fires.

Our area remains at a moderate to high risk of wildfires due to dry and windy conditions.
