A Pleasant Grove, Ark. man is facing charges after he allegedly fired a gun at his nephew in a long-running dispute over property.

According to court documents, Clifton Lee Carpenter (pictured below), 57, has been charged in Stone County Circuit Court with felony aggravated assault on a family member after authorities allege he fired a gun from a tree stand at his nephew on Jan. 17.

Carpenter’s arrest affidavit said Stone County authorities were aware of the long-running family dispute between the two over land when they were dispatched to the incident. The nephew told sheriff’s deputies he had been checking game cameras on the road behind his mother’s house on an ATV when he heard Carpenter yell at him and then saw Carpenter fire at him from the stand. According to the affidavit, a 10-year restraining order was issued against Carpenter in 2022 to protect the nephew.

Carpenter submitted a voluntary written statement to the sheriff’s department stating he did yell at his nephew and then fired a shot, but Carpenter said he was shooting at a coyote — and not his nephew.

According to the affidavit, authorities issued an arrest warrant on Feb. 23 after determining from Carpenter’s statement that he had violated the 2022 order of protection with the Jan. 17 event and was considered armed and dangerous.

Carpenter was arrested earlier this week on the felony charge. He also faces two misdemeanor charges: violation of an order of protection and harassment. He is being held in the Stone County Detention Center on a bond of $250,000.
