The Batesville School District (BSD) was recently named a 2024 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools District Sustainability Award winner. The award recognizes the district’s efforts to reduce environmental impact, promote health and wellness, and advance sustainability education.
According to a release from the BSD, the district was selected from a nationwide pool of institutions.
Superintendent Dr. Ken James said the award reflects the district’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
“It is truly an honor for the Batesville School District to receive the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools District Sustainability Award,” Dr. James said in the release. ‘This achievement reflects our unwavering dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility. We are proud to be recognized for our efforts in creating a healthier, more sustainable future for our students and community.”
Examples of Batesville’s initiatives that contributed to this prestigious award include:
- Solar Canopy: Innovative structures providing shelter while harnessing solar energy for everyday school activities.
- Pioneering Electric Engines: Leading the way in adopting electric engines for transportation, demonstrating a commitment to innovation.
- Raising Greens (above image): Empowering students with agricultural knowledge and skills for the challenges of tomorrow.
- Bee Hives (featured image): Utilizing bee hives to support pollination and contribute to the conservation of endangered bee populations.
- Tracking Solar Arrays: Implementing advanced solar tracking technology for increased efficiency and longevity.
- Agriculture and Animal Science Education: Integrating agricultural and animal science education into the curriculum to promote hands-on learning.
- Net Zero Efficiency: Utilizing centrally controlled thermostats to monitor and improve energy efficiency efforts.
- FFA Fish Hatchery (see below): Providing effective environmental and sustainability education through initiatives like the FFA Fish Hatchery.
- Portable Solar Lab Kits: Partnering with scientists and engineers to offer educational opportunities focused on reducing environmental impact.
- Green Gardens: Creating co-curricular opportunities and service learning experiences through green garden initiatives.
In the release, the district said the initiatives not only demonstrate Batesville’s commitment to sustainability, but also provide students with valuable skills and knowledge to become responsible stewards of the environment.
