The Humane Society of Independence County’s (HSIC) largest annual fundraiser, “Bark in the Park,” was a resounding success this past Saturday, June 15. Held under the warm summer sun, the event embraced this year’s heartwarming theme, “There’s No Place Like A Home,” attracting dog lovers and families across the community.

The festivities featured an array of engaging activities and drew over 20 local vendors, each contributing to the lively atmosphere. A notable highlight was “Concessions for a Cause,” which raised an impressive $700. Event attendees were encouraged to keep an eye out for this initiative at future community events, as every purchase directly benefits the Humane Society.

Among the crowd-favorite moments was the 50/50 raffle, where Johnny Morales emerged as the lucky winner. Morales took home $443, with the same amount benefitting the shelter. The excitement continued with the Ruger 10-22 rifle raffle, generously donated by Harris Farm & Home in Cave City, which Brian Johnson won.

The day was filled with competitions showcasing local canine talents and bonds. Diesel, owned by Daniel Shelton, won the “Alumni Walk,” a walk of pride for dogs previously adopted from the shelter. In the “Cutest Dog” contest, Biscuit (Allecia) took 3rd place, Dixie (Jody) claimed 2nd, and Ranger (Linda Edwards) charmed his way to 1st place.

Pinto (Lexie Toser) wowed the crowd with an impressive performance to win “Best Trick,” followed by Scarlette (Sodonna Wolfrom) in 2nd place. The “Look-Alike” contest saw Diesel (Daniel Shelton) take home the prize for best resemblance to his owner. Creative costumes were on full display as Becker (Kailee) won 1st place, followed by Dixie (Jody) and Ozzie (Myla Malone) in the “Best Costume” category.

The much-anticipated “Weenie Dog Race” provided thrilling entertainment, with Bruno (Tammy Angel) speeding to victory, Shelby (Brooklyn Yoder) placing 2nd, and a household tie between Sadie and Dixie (Laken Martin) for 3rd.

Despite the warm temperatures, community spirit and enthusiasm remained high throughout the event. Attendees enjoyed grilled chicken prepared by PECO’s team, with Dave Timko working tirelessly grilling hot dogs, including his famous “Pioneer Dogs,” donated by Kallsnick, and chips from Batesville’s own Outlaw Snax. A bounce house donated by White River Inflatables and Zaleta Med Spa with the Dunk Tank added to the day’s enjoyment.

The success of “Bark in the Park” was made possible by the generosity of numerous sponsors, with presenting sponsor Bad Boy Mowers leading the way.
