Clay gravel removed from the construction site of the new Independence County Senior Citizens Program’s Senior Center was used this week to address a public safety concern on the access road to the sandbar below White River Lock and Dam 1.

On his Facebook page Tuesday, Independence County Judge Kevin Jeffery said that while the sandbar continues to be a popular destination for county residents, the poor condition of the road made it inaccessible to most law enforcement and emergency vehicles.

Jeffery said that since the clay gravel, or overburden, needed to be removed from the construction site of the new center, he decided to “kill two birds with one stone” and use the material to repair the access road, making it more accessible to the emergency vehicles.
