The Howell County, Missouri, Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of human skeletal remains in a rural area near the Arkansas state line last Saturday.

The sheriff’s office said deputies responded to the scene on Aug. 10 and began a recovery operation that, due to weather and the complexity of the scene, continued through Wednesday. The Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted with the recovery effort.

According to the sheriff’s office, the remains have not been identified, and the office is awaiting the results of an autopsy before sending them to the state crime lab for further analysis. The process of identification is expected to take time.

Multiple agencies are assisting with the investigation, including the West Plains Police and Fire departments, the Howell County Coroner and Prosecutor’s offices, and law enforcement from Fulton and Sharp counties in Arkansas.
