A special meeting of the Batesville Planning Commission is scheduled for Monday to consider a conditional use permit for a planned café next to the Lyon College campus.
A conditional use permit is a contract between a local government and a property owner or business that allows the land to be used in a way that’s normally not permitted in that particular zoning area.
The proposed business, slated to be called The Magnolia Café, will be located at 325 22nd St., an area currently zoned R-2 residential. This zoning allows certain commercial establishments with a conditional use permit.
According to a café representative’s comment on the City of Batesville’s Facebook page, the house at that location (pictured above) will be converted into a food establishment serving coffee and providing a “dining experience unlike anything else” in town.
Some residents have expressed concern over the permit’s approval, noting on the city’s Facebook page that the business could increase traffic in the neighborhood.
The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Batesville Municipal Building at 500 E. Main St.
